Peruvian Sciences Club 2024

Apply as instructor

We call on doctoral students, graduates or postdocs in the fields of STEM2D to join as instructors who inspire a new generation of young Peruvian scientists in the 2024 edition of Peru Science Clubs.

This year we have three options to participate:

  1. Apply with your own club idea in person for 25 students.
  2. Apply to be an instructor of the Technology for Sensory Expansion club in person for 25 students.
  3. Apply with your own club idea in virtual mode for 15 students.

The 2024 edition will take place during January, 2024. If you are chosen in the in-person modality, Clubes de Ciencia Perú will assume all the costs of tickets, accommodation and transportation during the development of the clubs in Peru*. In the case of the virtual modality, we provide all the digital tools necessary to carry out the workshops.

* As of 09/12/2023, we have confirmed funding for 3 clubs.

2024 Edition

The edition will be held on January  2024

What is Clubes de Ciencia Perú

The program seeks to motivate young Peruvians for science, technology and innovation through intense workshops in which they experience the world of research and the scientific method: the conception of ideas, the design and execution of experiments and the communication of results. In addition, we expect instructors to promote students’ critical thinking.

Each club is led by an instructor who is a motivated researcher affiliated with a scientific or technological institution, that can teach (cutting-edge) scientific topics in a didactic, creative and unconventional way through the implementation of a combination of experimental, computational and theoretical activities.

Who will be my students?

The students of each club are chosen after an application process where they show their interest and motivation to participate in the club.

They will also have the following characteristics:

  • Young Peruvians between 16 and 23 years old
  • They will be studying 5th year of high school to the 6th cycle of university, inclusive (or 3rd year of university or institute).
I want to be an instructor

We are looking for:

  • PhD students, graduates or postdocs in a STEM2D field from anywhere in the world, affiliated with research institutions or with previous research experience.
  • They have communication skills with a focus on teamwork.
  • That they address the academic development of new scientist’s generations in an empathetic, healthy and diverse way, avoiding reproducing toxic and unhealthy attitudes towards the new scientific generation’s professional development.
  • Having Spanish is not a requirement. But it is highly recommended, especially in virtual editions, given that the main element of communication is through the voice.

We cover all instructores expenses during the performance of the workshop in Peru.

Timetable

The important dates to consider are the following:

  • Call for instructors: 09/05/2023 to 10/09/2023
  • Interviews with pre-selected:  October
  • 2024 Club’s Announcement: TBC
  • Opening of the call for students: November
  • Publication of selected students: December
  • Edition: January 2024

This year you have three options to apply.

With your own club idea

You must present a workshop proposal with a duration between 30 to 40 hours in total (for the in-person modality) or 16 to 24 hours (for the virtual modality). The theme of the club may be in any STEM2D area, including interdisciplinary topics, under the methodology that the instructor considers relevant.

As an instructor of our flagship club: Technology for Sensory Expansion

This club is a platform for each instructor to develop their approach to how technology expands our senses. Each club will have 25 students and last between 30 to 40 hours.

 About your proposal:

We suggest you design your Club proposal based on the idea: “learn by doing”. And by that we mean that the Club should be a very hands-on course where students have the opportunity to participate as much as possible, think of an innovative scientific topic that you would like to teach and think about it creatively.

We are strongly interested in giving to our students a taste of how you apply the scientific method into your research/industry activities.

This is your chance to design a course that you wish you had taken while in high school or college! Also, you can use all kinds of available online resources (software, online services, websites, simulation services, jupyter notebooks, etc.). Preferably if they are open source and/or open access.

Take into account the following:

  • During your application you will need to describe the club you would like to teach.
  • Describe the milestones you want to achieve during the workshop and how you plan to do it generally.
  • How will the development of critical thinking in students be promoted to help them discover new approaches to address problems?
  • How will the expected objectives of the workshop be carried out and the tools, dynamics or other ideas that you will use for this purpose?
  • What resources (software, materials, online services, websites, simulation services, jupyter notebooks, etc.) will your Club need?
  • If you are shortlisted, during the interview we will organize with you the best schedule for your classes. If you have any questions, write to us at clubesdecienciaperu@gmail.com.

About the Technology for Sensory Expansion Club:

Science teaches us that there is much more “out there” than our senses grasp. Over time, people have learned to enhance their senses in many ways: microscopes, telescopes, robots, etc. Modern technologies offer opportunities to perceive our world in new and exciting ways, and through the scientific method reveal new realities of the world around us.

For this club, we are looking for instructors who develop software and hardware projects that exemplify the augmentation of the human senses.

Each club can be different and depending on the experience of the instructors, some topics may be explained in more detail than others. The club is a week-long intensive class lasting eight hours each day and is based on the design of Frank Wilczek, 2004 Nobel Laureate in Physics.

Some of the topics that the club can discuss are the following:

    • Human color perception
    • Physics of light and sound
    • Synesthesia
    • Hyperspectral cameras
    • Hyperspectral imaging
    • human senses
    • Physical computing with Arduino
    • Python programming
    • Spectrometers
